CAPERmed 2014 - I Meeting - Lisbon, 3-4 July
In recent years, members of the air pollution scientific community have made important new advances for understanding and quantifying current impacts of air pollution on Mediterranean ecosystems. As we learn more about it, we come to realize the fragility of this landscape to air pollution and the importance of this new knowledge to understand implication of climate change on Mediterranean ecosystems.
CAPERMED 2014 encourages submissions from all aspects of research dealing with air pollution on Mediterranean ecosystems, such as (1) air pollution effects on ecosystem structure and function (2) monitoring, indicators and assessment or (3) pollution chemistry and modelling. The meeting is expected to attract a broad participation, and is intended to foster scientific collaborations among researchers but also interactions with staff from Environment and Conservation Agencies.
We look forward to meeting you!

General information
Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) is the capital and the largest city of Portugal.
Language: The official language is Portuguese. English is widely spoken.
Timezone: UTC0 (1 hour behind European Standard Time [GMT]), summer UTC+1
Phone calls: Country Code: +351; Lisbon Prefix: 21
Passport and visas - European Union citizens only need a valid identification card in order to enter Portugal. Passports are necessary for nationals of countries outside the European Union. Visas are required for non-European citizens who plan to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. Again, depending on nationality, tourists might also be required to hold a visa regardless of the duration of their stay in Portugal. Please contact your local Portuguese Embassy, Consulate or your Travel Agency for further information.
Climate: Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate that is mild with dry, hot summers and moderate seasonality. Daily mean temperature in July ranges between 18°C (65°F) and 28°C (82°F). Sea breezes off the Atlantic Ocean bring some relief on hot days. Average annual temperature of the sea is 17.5°C (63.5°F).
A 30 SPF sunscreen is recommended.
Transportation: Lisbon's Portela Airport is located within the city limits and has an underground Metro de Lisboa station at the Southern edge of the Terminal 1 arrivals area. The metro red line connects the city centre and the other three subway lines with the airport every 6 to 9 minutes, from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m.; the metro takes 16 minutes to reach the city centre and 5 minutes to Gare do Oriente train and bus station.
Carris city buses stop just outside Terminal 1 arrivals, with bus route 783 and night route 208 connecting to downtown and main train stations. Two Aerobus routes prepared for travel luggage connect the airport with the downtown area.
Taxis: The city is served by 3.500 taxis and a taxi ride from the airport to the city centre should cost between 8.00 € and 15.00 €. The usual urban taxi fares are:
Day (06.00h to 21.00h) - 3.25 € + 0.10 €/km
Night, weekend and holidays: 3.90 € + 0.10 €/km
Taxis are widely used by the locals, and in comparison to the taxi fares in other countries, the Lisbon taxis are still to be considered a rather inexpensive means of transportation.
Currency: The official currency of Portugal is the euro. Subunits refer to 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, and they come in coins. Coins also refer to 1 and 2 euro coins. Banknotes refer to 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro bills.
Banks offer the best exchange rates. The highest density of banks can be spotted in the Baixa district, but are widely distributed. As a rule, they open Monday to Friday, roughly speaking between 8.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. ATMs are largely available.
Tips: The gratification is optional, but usually we give 10% in taxis, restaurants and cafeterias.
Electricity: In Portugal, sockets are designed according to the European standards (two-pin sockets) and they are supplied with 220/380 volts. Appliances requiring American-type plugs must be used with adapter plugs.
Medical care: Clinics and hospitals provide round the clock emergency service. The national emergency phone number is 112.
Smoking: The Portuguese law, in accordance with Regulations in force in the majority of European Countries and the USA, does not allow smoking in any public transportation or in any closed public areas. (Some restaurants, bars and discotecs may have a designated smoking area).
